The Tale of Peter Rabbit is a timeless classic that has been enjoyed by children for generations. Learn about what children can learn from this classic tale and how ACTs of life incorporates it to create our popular English Speech and Drama Curriculum.

The Tale of Peter Rabbit is a children’s book written and illustrated by Beatrix Potter. The book was first published in 1902 and has since become a classic of children’s literature, selling millions of copies worldwide. It has been translated into more than 35 languages and adapted into numerous films, television shows, and gets incorporated in ACTs of life’ English Speech and Drama Curriculum!

The story revolves around Peter Rabbit – a mischievous, curious rabbit and his adventures in Mr. McGregor’s garden. The story provides many valuable life lessons for children. Let’s discover what these life lessons are!

The Valuable Life Lessons Learned from The Tale of Peter Rabbit

  1. Respect for Nature

The Tale of Peter Rabbit teaches children to respect nature and the creatures that inhabit it. Peter Rabbit is a mischievous little bunny who disobeys his mother’s instructions and sneaks into Mr. McGregor’s garden. He eats so many vegetables in Mr. McGregor’s garden  to the point of having a tummy ache. Not only that, he also gets chased by Mr. McGregor with a rake held in his hand! This teaches children to respect and care more for nature and the creatures that live in it.

  1. Consequences of Disobedience

Children also learn about the consequences of disobedience and the danger of going out without their mommy or daddy’s permission. In the story, Peter disobeys his mother’s instructions and sneaks into Mr. McGregor’s garden while his little sisters, Flopsy, Mopsy and Cotton-Tail are picking the blackberries. His mischievous behaviour  leads to him getting into trouble with Mr. McGregor and almost loses his life! This teaches children that they should always follow their parents’ instructions and that there are consequences for disobeying them.

Peter Rabbit’s adventures teach children many valuable life lessons!

  1. Problem-Solving

The Tale of Peter Rabbit also teaches children about problem-solving. When Peter gets into trouble with Mr. McGregor, he has to think quickly in order to escape from the garden. This teaches children that they can use their wits and creativity to solve problems and get out of difficult situations.

  1. Friendship

The Tale of Peter Rabbit also teaches children about the importance of friendship. During his adventures in Mr. McGregor’s garden, Peter Rabbit has a chance to meet many new friends, including the black birds, a mouse, and a white cat (though Peter does not say anything to her!)!  When Peter gets into trouble with Mr. McGregor, his friends come to his rescue. They cheer him up and encourage him to find a way to escape from Mr. McGregor’s garden. This teaches children that they can rely on their friends for help when they are in trouble or need assistance with something.

  1. Perseverance

Lastly, The Tale of Peter Rabbit teaches children about perseverance and never giving up,  even when things seem impossible. Despite being chased by Mr. McGregor, being stuck in a gooseberry net and almost gets caught forever inside the sieve, Peter never gives up and eventually manages to escape from the garden safe and sound.  This teaches children that they should never give up, even when things seem impossible, and that with enough determination and hard work, anything is possible.

Children also learn to articulate better and become more confident!
